The first three renewals of this two-mile race have gone to lightly weighted and rated horses that have been returned at SP’s between 15/2 and 9/1. Those stats could be a good pointer to the chances of Tim Rocco who looks to have got in nicely here with 10-5. A winner at Doncaster and Newcastle already this season, he didn’t appear to like going right-handed quite as much on his runs either side of those back-to-back wins and he could return to his best now going left-handed.

The Paddy Pie is the only course winner in this field but that win came over a shorter distance and he’s looked to get outstayed over this sort of trip on his previous attempts at it. Duel At Dawn is interesting as he’s now almost a stone lower in the handicap than the mark he was allotted in his novice season over fences but he may not have the pace to capitalise. That’s why the vote goes to the progressive Quarenta, who would have won by further than a neck last time at Warwick if he hadn’t made a mistake at the last.

Tom O’Brien takes over from a claimer aboard Faithful Mount who has gone nicely on his last two starts and this useful former flat horse could have what it takes to win over hurdles off a mark of 114, given that he won off a mark of 78 on the flat in September. What really makes him look a bet though is the fact he won at Haydock on his only previous visit on the flat and a return to this course could be ideal over hurdles.

Trainer GP Cromwell had a welcome winner this week and that return to form could mean A Place Apart is ready to win this with cheekpieces refitted for this lucrative assignment. James Bowen was in the saddle when he won in October and again when a decent third in better company in December. Bowen rides again here and he can hopefully take advantage of a nice low-weight.
