Free Tips For Sandown Races

It’s Matchbook Imperial Cup Day at Sandown on Saturday (March 9) and, despite it being the weekend before the Cheltenham Festival, there’s some decent horse racing action.

Check out our analysis and free tips for the European Breeders’ Fund Matchbook Vip ‘national Hunt’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final, the Matchbook Imperial Cup, the EBF Stallions/TBA Mares’ Standard Open NH Flat Race, and the Matchbook ‘Best Value Exchange’ Handicap Chase.

Winners of the grade three European Breeders’ Fund Matchbook Vip ‘national Hunt’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final aren’t always easy to find, with five of the last eight winners returned at double-figure SP’s.

Despite that, I’m very keen on the chances of Before Midnight who fulfils plenty of the recent trends associated with winners of the race. Six-year-olds have won six of the last 10 renewals and he also fulfils the typical ratings and weights criteria. He could also still have plenty in hand of the handicapper on his first venture into handicap company, and his trainer Nicky Henderson has a good record in the race.

The Imperial Cup throws up some strong trends and the money that’s poured in this week for one horse that fits those trends looks a tip in itself. The horse in question is Extra Mag and this five-year-old is completely unexposed after just three runs.

A mark of 132 and a light-weight also look perfect, as does the fact that his trainer David Pipe and his dad Martin Pipe have trained nine previous winners of this race. Like many of the Pipe winners, he’s yet to race at Sandown, but he has proven himself on different right-handed tracks. His trainer also applies cheek-pieces for the first time, which is another pointer to this race being his main target for the season.

Nine of the last 10 winners of the EBF Stallions/TBA Mares’ Standard Open NH Flat Race have won on their previous start and only three horses in this year’s field fulfil that criteria.

One of those is the likely favourite Silver Forever but, as she’s already run in a Listed Bumper and was beaten, she’s passed over. Redbridge Gold is also passed over on the grounds that she’s been beaten too many times to think she can suddenly improve enough to win this.

That leaves us with Misty Whisky, who failed to win at Aintree on debut after being well-backed to do so, but enjoyed a confidence booster last time. It also doesn’t worry me that the stable’s first-choice jockey Noel Fehily is on the other Harry Fry-trained runner Whitehotchillifili for the first time, as Sean Bowen has ridden Misty Whisky on both her previous runs.

Big-weights have been carried to weight to victory in several recent renewals of the Matchbook ‘Best Value Exchange’ Handicap Chase and Ami Debois could be classy enough to deft top-weight this year.

The nine-year-old has run well in three handicaps already this season and the best of those performances came over course and distance when beaten just a neck by Classic Ben, who landed one of the biggest gambles of the season.

Ami Debois loves to race prominently, which is normally an asset as Sandown, and this slight drop in class could be just what he needs to get his head in front for the first time this year.
