Free Tips For Newmarket’s Qipco Guineas Festival

Newmarket’s Qipco Guineas Festival (4-5 April) is a two-day fixture in which the first two classics of the season take place. The best three-year-old colts take the headlines of the first day as they battle it out in the 2,000 Guineas, whilst the fillies take centre-stage on the second day when they contest the 1,000 Guineas.

Both flagship events are boosted by a strong supporting cast of races and we’ve got free tips for the Palace House Stakes, Jockey Club Stakes, 2,000 Guineas, Dahlia Stakes, and the 1,000 Guineas.

Zoustar Palace House Stakes (Saturday 2.20)

This is the first big test of the season for five-furlong sprinters, and this year’s field is headed by last year’s winner Mab’s Cross who rounded off last season with a stunning Group 1 win in France. The filly Marsha carried a Group 1 penalty to victory in the 2016 edition, so it’s not impossible he could follow-up, but conceding 10lb to a race-fit Sergei Prokofiev may prove beyond him on his seasonal reappearance. Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old showed an electric turn-of-foot to come from last to first at Navan five-weeks ago and, interestingly, put up one of his best performances of last season over course and distance.

Roaring Lion Jockey Club Stakes (Saturday 2.55)

Last year’s winner Defoe and Young Rascal are two decent horses at this level and both should strip much fitter than when disappointing on their seasonal debuts. But despite their respective stables are back in full flow, even their best form doesn’t like quite as good as that of Coronet who chased home the likes of Enable and Magical last year, form which entitles her to win this. She also won on her only previous run at Newmarket and will like the ground more than her two main rivals if it remains good-to-firm.

2,000 Guineas (Saturday 3.35)

Aidan O’Brien saddles Magna Grecia and Ten Sovereigns in a bid to win his tenth 2,000 Guineas. However, the horse to take them on with could be Skardu. He’s impressed when winning both his starts at Newmarket so far, especially last time in the Craven Stakes when he travelled and quickened impressively at a time when most of his stable’s runners were running averagely. That’s not been the case this week, with the Haggas yard firing in plenty of winners, and he must surely go close if he’s improved just a little bit from his last run.
2,000 Guineas Free Tip: Skardu (5 Places Each-Way) @ 8.00 WilliamHill, SkyBet

Charm Spirit Dahlia Stakes (Sunday 2.20)

Billesdon Brook won the 1,000 Guineas last year but, though neither she or Veracity won on either of the three occasions they met afterwards last year, it was Veracious that came out on top twice. They were only ever separated by one place, so there shouldn’t be too much between them, but it is Michael Stoute’s beautifully-bred Veracity that is fancied to have improved more from three to four.

1,000 Guineas (Sunday 3.35)

Aidan O’Brien fields a typically strong hand, whilst Roger Varian also two strong chances with Qabala and Mot Juste who finished first and second in the Nell Gwyn earlier this season. However, the most impressive two-year-old filly last season was Skitter Skatter. She didn’t show too much over sprint trips on her first four starts but looked a completely different proposition when stepped up to seven furlongs on her last three starts, notching-up a hat-trick with an impressive win in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. She found plenty in the final furlong that day, which suggested she’ll relish this straight mile as a three-year-old, and it will be a major disappointment if she doesn’t at least hit the frame here.
