ITV are showing the first five races of the 2018 Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday – and The Geek has a tip for each of them.
Cheltenham 1.30 – Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tip
The roar of the Cheltenham crowd as the tape goes up to start the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is usually deafening but I think there will be an even louder roar when Ruby Walsh steers the Willie Mullins’ trained Getabird to victory. He’s always been highly-regarded and is fancied to take the scalps of the leading British runners Kalashnikov and First Flow.

Cheltenham 2.10 – Arkle Tip
The crowd’s roar may be even louder some forty-minutes later if, as expected, Footpad jumps his way to victory in the Arkle Chase for that combination of Walsh and Mullins. His jumping has been that good that the usually reserved Mullins said he’s never had a novice chaser jump better and Footpad has already proven he handles soft ground and he has vital previous festival experience.

Cheltenham 2.50 – Ultima Handicap Chase Tip
The Ultima Handicap Chase is never an easy puzzle to solve but I don’t see why last year’s runner-up Singlefarmpayment won’t be there at the business-end. He was running a cracker when falling in the Ladbrokes Trophy in December but has always tended to reserve his best form for Cheltenham and he’s just 2lb higher than last year when beaten by the classy Un Temps Pour Tout.

Cheltenham 3.30 – Champion Hurdle
It’s hard to fault last year’s champion Buveur D’air as he won easily last year from a decent-field and has, to the eye, jumped even better in his three warm-up races this year. However, Wicklow Brave missed the start last season by a good six-lengths yet was upsides the winner three out. He then went on to win at the Punchestown Festival and may enjoy the soft ground at this year’s festival if he can get away on level-terms.
Wicklow Brave each-way @ 15.00 Winner Sports
Cheltenham 4.10 – Mares Hurdle
I can’t find a single reason to oppose Apple’s Jade in the Mares’ Hurdle and even the fact that she’s unlikely to be available at anything better than odds-on doesn’t put me off. Her form this season over 2½ miles and further would probably have made her favourite for the Stayers’ Hurdle and this progressive powerhouse of a mare should win this easily unless she’s unlucky in running.
Apple’s Jade win @ 1.571 Winner Sports
