The Geek Heads To Haydock
The Geek has four tips for you this Saturday in races at Haydock and Musselburgh. All four races are being shown live on ITV.
Line Of Reason looks to have been laid out for a repeat of his win in the 2017 renewal of this five-furlongs sprint, and it’s easy to see why with over £60,000 to the winner. This once 111-rated horse won last year’s renewal off a mark of 97 under today’s jockey Joe Fanning but finds himself on a mark of just 90 this time. The race looks sure to be run at a similarly fast tempo to last year too with trailblazers El Astronaute and Caspian Prince again in the field. He came out of stall-8 last year and is also just one stall wider this year in stall-7. His trainer Paul Midgley also won the Epsom Dash last Saturday and, though he’s got two other runners, hopefully Line Of Reason will be the one.

This year’s Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes possible lacks a filly or mare with the star quality of either of the last two winners, Journey or Bateel. However, if there is a filly in the field who could get somewhere close to matching their exploits, it is likely to be God Given. She won three times last season as a four-year-old including over course and distance and, if she’s anything like her half-sibling Postponed, she should improve with age. She may have only been fourth on her seasonal debut, but she wasn’t far behind some useful colts that day in Barsanti and Mirage Dancer, whilst the third Salouen has since run a cracker in the Group 1 Coronation Cup. Back down in class against her own sex, she should be very difficult to beat if running to a similar level today.

Judicial has 4lb to find with Muthmir on official ratings but, if Mabs Cross is a reliable form-stick, he probably deserves to be favourite after just getting touched-off by that horse in the Palace Stakes. That’s because Mabs Cross, on identical terms, has since finished three-lengths in front of Muthmir when the pair were fourth and fifth behind Battaash over this course and distance in a Group 2. Judicial’s trainer Julie Camacho is also in great form having won with three of her last nine runners.

An interesting renewal of the John Of Gaunt Stakes leaves punters with the quandary of whether to rely on proven class or untapped potential. Dutch Connection is the proven class of the race having won five times at seven-furlongs from nine runs at the distance. He’s also a multiple winner at Group 3 level and can also boast a Group 2 win. Fast conditions are also ideal and, after running in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over a mile which usually proves beyond him, he surely must go close. Meanwhile, Emmaus is the untapped potential having won on all three occasions he’s tacked seven-furlongs. He could yet make up into a top-class horse but, as he’s yet to win a group race, I’d rather stick with the proven class of Dutch Connection.
