Friday is the first day of the new two-day Ladbrokes Winter Carnival at Newbury, and we’ve a tip for each of the four races being shown by ITV.
Willoughby Court didn’t achieve anything like as much over hurdles as main rival Yanworth did, but he could easily have made up into a star over the smaller obstacles judging on his defeat of Neon Wolf at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. He was by no means blemish free on his chasing debut, but managed to stay on his feet, something which Yanworth failed to do last time, and Yanworth never looked the most natural jumper even over hurdles. Willoughby Court also tends to improve from his first run to his second, and he could put some serious pressure on Yanworth‘s jumping if adopting his usual front-running role on this galloping track.

Willie Boy has impressed on his last two starts over fences and, as the only course and distance winner in the field, we know he’s happy around a track that plenty of horses don’t take to. He was tenacious here too when holding off the well-handicapped Henri Pari Morgan, yet the market didn’t suggest he was particularly well-fancied as he was sent off at 10/1. That makes me think connections probably thought he would come on for the run and, if that’s the case, the 6-year-old could easily cope with the 6lb rise he was given for that win.

Thistlecrack officially achieved a 7lb higher rating over hurdles than Unowhatimeanharry has currently achieved yet, as he didn’t race over hurdles last season, he finds himself receiving 6lb from his main rival. There are some doubts about him, as this is his first run for 10-months after sustaining a tendon injury, and he spent last season over fences, but several form-lines using useful yardstick Cole Harden suggest he’ll be tough to beat if only 95% ready to go.
Tip: Thistlecrack win @ 1/1 with LeoVegas
Hello George filled the pockets of his supporters last time he was at Newbury, when he was backed like defeat was out of the question. He’s now 12lb higher in the ratings, but should still go well under Richard Johnson whose 9 rides on him have produced figures of 3/2/1/1/3/3/2/1/2 – making him look a solid each-way bet. Phillip Hobbs has also trained 3 of the last 10 winners of this race.
Tip: Hello George each-way @ 11/2 with LeoVegas
